What You Need to Know About Falcons

Coloring in these printable falcon illustrations is the perfect chance to learn some new facts about these incredible birds of prey! Here are fifteen things you may not know about falcons.

1. Family of Flyers

There are around 40 species of falcons worldwide. The Peregrine Falcon is known for its speed, the American Kestrel for its colors, and the Gyrfalcon for its size. Each one has its own special skill and characteristics.

2. Masters of the Hunt

With their powerful beak and sharp claws, falcons are amazing hunters. They swoop down on their prey with perfect aim, making sure dinner is served fresh every time.

3. A Menu That’s Wild

Falcons aren’t picky eaters. From songbirds and ducks to salty seafood, they’ll eat pretty much anything. These carnivores even enjoy some crunchy insects for dessert!

4. Globetrotters

Falcons have their passports stamped all over the world, from the icy Arctic to the sunny tropics. These brave birds make themselves at home everywhere, from North America to Europe and Asia.

5. The Speedy Gonzales of the Sky

Peregrine falcons can dive at speeds of over 240 mph! Their high-speed hunting dives, called stoops, make them the fastest animals on Earth.

6. Eagle Eyes

A falcon’s vision is so sharp that they can spot a tiny mouse from half a mile away! This perfect eyesight also helps them to see predators like foxes and wild cats that might attack their nests.

7. Aerial Acrobats

A fierce falcon uses its wings to slice through the air and change direction easily. This skill is important for hunting, as it allows them to dart after quick-moving prey like rabbits and bats.

8. Cliffside Condos

Instead of building nests close to the ground, falcons prefer the high life. They lay their eggs on tall cliffs or skyscrapers, where the view is unbeatable, and the safety is top-notch.

9. A Rainbow of Raptors

Falcons come in different shades and detailed patterns. From the deep blues and blacks of the Peregrine Falcon to the bright reds and whites of the American Kestrel, each species has its own unique look. These colors help falcons blend into their environments, making them better at sneaking up on prey.

10. The Great Migration

Each year, Falcons travel to find warmer climates and food. This epic journey is called “migration,” and can be thousands of miles long.

11. Ancient Flyers

While falcons can live up to 25 years in captivity, they only live around 12 to 15 years in the wild. This difference highlights the challenges falcons face in nature, from finding food to avoiding predators like owls, eagles, and hawks.

12. Falconry: The Sport of Kings

In falconry, humans and falcons become the perfect hunting pair. The teamwork involves training falcons to hunt small animals and birds. This sport shows off the incredible intelligence of these winged creatures.

13. Baby Falcons Take Flight

When falcon chicks hatch, they’re blind and covered in soft, fluffy feathers called down. Over the first few weeks, they develop adult feathers and start to see. At six weeks old, the chicks spread their wings and experience their first flight.

14. Talkative Talons

Each falcon species communicates with a unique set of calls and sounds. These can range from sharp, piercing cries to softer, more calming chirps. Falcons use these sounds to attract mates, signal danger, and chat with their families.

15. The Comeback Kid

Peregrine falcons were once in danger of disappearing from our planet forever. Thanks to breeding programs and the banning of harmful chemicals, these birds have made a heroic comeback. These facts shine a light on the world of falcons, from their sharp eyesight to their insane speed and hunting skills.
