What You Need to Know About Birds

Coloring in these printable bird illustrations is the perfect chance to learn some new facts about our feathered friends! Here are sixteen things you may not know about birds.

1. A World of Birds

Did you know there are over 10,000 different species of birds flying, swimming, and waddling around our planet? Each type comes with its own unique set of characteristics, from a wide range of colors to different shapes and sizes.

2. Talkative Parrots

The colorful parrot is the chatterbox of the bird world! With their powerful beaks, they can copy human speech and sounds from their environment.

3. A Real Head-Turner

Owls can turn their heads up to 270 degrees in either direction. This incredible flexibility helps them spot prey and keep an eye out for predators like snakes.

4. Nesting Wonders

A bird can build a cozy nest using just leaves and twigs. Hidden high up in the trees, each nest helps to keep their eggs and little birds safe. This is also where parent birds will bring berries, worms, and insects to feed their hungry chicks.

5. Birds of Prey

Eagles, hawks, and falcons are the predators of the sky, swooping down at incredible speeds to catch their prey. These birds help keep the balance in nature by hunting mice and fish.

6. Rainbow Feathers

Birds come in a variety of colors and patterns. Peacocks are one of the most dazzling bird species, using their vibrant tail feathers to attract a mate.

7. Flightless Birds

Not all birds are able to fly high. Penguins have flippers that make them expert swimmers and ostriches have long, powerful legs for running at high speeds. Both species have adapted perfectly to their environments, showing that you don’t need to fly to be an amazing bird.

8. Farmyard Friends

Chickens, turkeys, and geese are an important source of food for humans. Chickens are great egg layers, while turkeys are often the centerpiece of holiday meals during Thanksgiving and Christmas. A goose’s feathers can also be used for cozy duvets.

9. The American Symbol

The bald eagle is a symbol of America’s freedom and strength. With its white-feathered head and sharp gaze, this majestic eagle can be found across North America, soaring high and proud.

10. Cute Baby Bird Beginnings

All baby birds are born from eggs. Some chicks are born blind and completely dependent on their parents for protection and food.

11. The Dance of Love

Birds have fascinating mating rituals. These can involve both males and females doing funky dances, singing a special song, or building amazing nests to impress each other.

12. Hovering Hummingbird

Hummingbirds are like tiny helicopters, buzzing from flower to flower. They can fly forwards, backwards, and even hover in one spot. This special flying skill helps them sip nectar from flowers while staying in the air.

13. The Perfect Feathered Friend

Owning a bird like a parrot, canary, or finch as a pet comes with responsibilities. They need a suitable environment, proper diet, and social interaction. Some birds, like parrots, live for over 50 years and are a big commitment!

14. Doves: Peaceful Flyers

Doves are known all around the world as a symbol of peace. Seeing a dove reminds us to be kind to others and promote peace.

15. The Speedy Golden Eagle

Golden eagles can dive through the sky at speeds of up to 50 mph. Their sharp eyes can spot a rabbit or a fish from far away, making them impressive hunters.

16. Nature’s Drummers

Downy woodpeckers use their beaks like a drill to find insects hiding under tree bark. This makes a well-known “knocking” sound. Hopefully, this flying list of bird facts has shown you the wonder of our feathered friends. Got any interesting insights of your own?
