What You Need to Know About Snakes

Coloring in these printable snake illustrations is the perfect chance to learn some new facts about these remarkable reptiles! Here are thirteen things you may not know about snakes.

1. Slithering Species

There are over 3,000 species of snakes slithering around the world. From deserts to oceans, you’ll find snakes in almost every nook and cranny of our planet. Each different species has adapted to survive in its chosen environment.

2. Lengthy Legends

Snakes come in various sizes, ranging from the tiny to the mighty. The Barbados threadsnake is a cute little snake so small it could curl up on a quarter! The giant python, however, can stretch to over 20 feet long.

3. Shake, Rattle, and Slither

Rattlesnakes are famous for the unique rattling sound they make with their tails. This sound warns predators like eagles, owls, and foxes to stay away.

4. Rainbow Reptiles

Snakes come in many various colors, from the neon-green bamboo pit viper to the Eastern coral snake with a pattern of black, yellow, and bright red bands. These vibrant colors let enemies know they’re dangerous and warn them to back off!

5. Solo From the Start

Some snakes lay eggs in a nest, while others give birth to live young. No matter how they arrive, baby snakes are on their own from the very beginning. Luckily, these slimy serpents are born with natural instincts and know how to survive.

6. Cold Gaze

Interestingly, snakes don’t blink. Instead of eyelids like us, a snake’s eyes are protected by clear scales. This feature gives them that famous (and terrifying) unblinking stare.

7. Skin Shedding

Snakes shed their skin several times a year in a process called molting, which allows them to grow and removes parasites. By rubbing against rough surfaces, they slip out of their old skin, revealing a shiny new layer underneath.

8. Fang Facts

Snake venom can be very dangerous, but not all snakes have it. Venomous snakes use their sharp fangs to inject toxins into their prey before swallowing them whole.  Non-venomous snakes don’t have venom, but they can still be great hunters in other ways. Corn snakes are super sneaky and use speed to catch their prey. Boa constrictors, however, wrap their bodies around animals, squeezing them tightly until they’re ready to eat.

9. Jaw-Dropping Diets

A snake’s mouth can open super wide thanks to special joints in their jaw. This ability allows a snake to swallow prey bigger than its head! Many snakes will snack on mice, frogs, birds, and rabbits. Some larger snakes, like pythons and anaconda, can eat deer, pigs, and even predators like alligators.

10. Mamba Menace

The black mamba is Africa’s largest venomous snake. They’re around 8 to 14 feet long. This serpent can also move at speeds of 12.5 miles per hour. This mix of speed and powerful venom makes them one of the most deadly snakes in the world.

11. Year of the Snake

In the Chinese zodiac, being born in the Year of the Snake means you’re seen as wise, charming, and thoughtful. Cultures around the world admire snakes for their intelligence and how mysterious they are.

12. Smart Serpents

Snakes are smarter than some people think. They can learn how to get through mazes and even remember the way. This problem-solving skill means snakes are not just good at hunting but also at thinking and remembering.

13. Danger Dance

The king cobra is often known for “dancing” during snake charmer performances, but they’re not actually moving to the music. The snakes are reacting to the movement of the flute or charmer. This behavior, mistaken for dancing, is the snake’s way of staying alert to something it thinks is a threat. Learning about the fascinating world of snakes reveals their incredible features and abilities. Got more reptile stories or facts to share?
